Julia Mizzell is the founder and lead spray tan artist at MUSE Tan Atelier, based in Charlotte, NC. Originally from Charleston, SC, Julia has lived across the Southeast, before settling in North Carolina. A lifelong lover of sunless tanning, Julia was first introduced to the world of self-tanning at just 14 years old. From drugstore products, to using spray tan booths in salons, to her first airbrush tans for prom, then discovering more diverse tanning artists and methods while living in Miami; the obsession quickly grew into a deep understanding of the art of tanning and what it means to achieve a glowing, even complexion that enhances natural beauty without the dangers of sun exposure.
Growing up on the coast, where the beach was a central part of her youth, Julia witnessed the damaging effects of sun exposure, from hyperpigmentation to scars, premature aging, and the looming risk of skin cancer. This personal journey of hyperpigmentation and the thickening of scar tissue when realizing laying on the beach and using tanning beds was actually counterproductive for having an even complexion-fueled a passion for sunless tanning as a safer, healthier alternative to traditional tanning, especially for people of color who often face unique skin care challenges.
With a background in esthetics, completing esthetician training from Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology in 2017, Julia developed a deep love for skincare ingredients and cosmetic chemistry. Her passion for skin health expanded into a side career as a yoga teacher and wellness advocate, where she founded a non-profit dedicated to supporting survivors of intimate abuse, sex trafficking, and the commercial sex industry. This work allowed her to connect with women and support their personal empowerment and well-being.
After relocating to Charlotte and closing her yoga studio, Julia pivoted back to her passion for spray tanning. With years of experience working and managing tanning salons, as well as overseeing operations for a tanning chain across the Carolinas, Julia now uses her expertise to offer custom, high-quality spray tanning at MUSE Tan Atelier. Her approach to tanning is both artistic and scientific, with each treatment tailored to the client’s skin tone, texture, and desired glow.
Julia is committed to helping her clients achieve the perfect tan while educating them on the importance of sun protection, skincare, and the often-overlooked risks of sun exposure. She is especially passionate about addressing the misinformation that people of color often receive about skincare, skin cancer, and melanoma prevention.
When she’s not in the studio, Julia enjoys a glass of wine, working out, trying new foods, spending time at the beach, reading, and volunteering for local organizations.
